Christmas lights have evolved and improved a lot since the early designs of the 1920's. Most old style Christmas lights utilized large bulbs which housed a big filament. The big filament allowed the bulb to create a lot more light but it was also very unsafe because it produced a lot of heat and was very inefficient.

Incandescent mini lights have been on the market for a long time. Although incandescent Christmas lights are quickly losing favor and market share to the more energy-efficient LED Christmas lights, incandescent mini lights are still widely used. There was no such thing as LED Christmas lights and the incandescent mini lights that were available were only offered in a few colors and string sizes. Electric Christmas lights are believed to have been first invented by Edward H. Johnson in 1882. The first electric Christmas lights were walnut sized incandescent lamps that were hand-wired together in series. It was not until the early 1930's that electric Christmas lights widely replaced candles as the preferred light source for holiday decorating. However, the original electric Christmas lights were not mini style lights.
